The Pick Up Process

You pay when you pick it up. I accept cash, gift cards to local Arlington Heights resturants and of course BEER!

OK, so what’s included in a tuneup?

I’ll be performing the following work on your bike:

  • Adjust gears and brakes (so it will shift and stop)
  • Lube drivetrain (so it won’t squeak)
  • Minor wheel truing (so the wheels spin straight and don’t rub)
  • Adjust/tighten headset, bottom bracket, hubs and hardware (so it’s quiet and safe to ride)
  • Wipe down frame and wheels (so it looks good)
  • Inflate Tires to appropriate pressure (so you don’t have to work so hard)

Any parts/work that are required above and beyond this will only be done with your approval.

Why Beer for Gears Exists

Why you should bring your bike to us instead of one of the bigger shops in the area?

I’ll start by saying we’d be honored to work on your bike!  I’ll follow that up with a lot of shops are going out of business!  So many people ask how we got started and why we do this, here’s the quick version…

Beers For Gears started as a pet project for me.  My day job has me working a lot (but never more than I want to!) and I needed an outlet.

In looking around at available options for people, it became clear that in order to get your bike tuned up around here, you need to part with hundreds of dollars. Having worked in bicycle retail and service for a few years, I can confidently say that most people don’t need hundreds of dollars worth of work done to their bike every year. Most folks need air in the tires, the chain lubed, gears adjusted and a quick wipe-down. Gee, just the stuff I love to do, and I have to say am pretty good at doing!

One thing I have also gotten pretty good at doing is finding new beers that I like. And that has been fun!

So I decided to put those two things together. I offer a resource for people who need simple maintenance done to their bike(s). I also want to stock my beer fridge.

Therein lies the beauty of Beers for Gears. You bring me your bike. I fix it. You compensate me in cash, beer or some combination of the two. I have rates, and I can negotiate as well. It’s a pretty sweet gig.

Are you legit?
Do you know what you are doing?

I spent a little over a decade in the bike industry. I was the guy in charge of building up and maintaining the demo fleet and fixing my colleagues’ bikes before the lunch rides.

When we moved to Arlington Heights, I missed the relaxation of spending time tuning up bikes and the satisfaction that comes with having a well-performing bike.  I still have all my tools and a sweet work space. You might even find me freelancing with a local shop or two!

So yeah, I know what I’m doing and if I can get a bike dialed for a media guy, I’m confident I can get your bike dialed, too!!

A GREAT Way To Compensate Me For My Work

Beers for Gears is here to help people who don’t want to go to a bike shop to get their service and repair work done. It’s for people who prefer to support a neighborhood guy who gets the job done just as well. The kind of guy who you would trust to work on your bike and then still throw back a beer with. That’s me. I’m here to help. And I’m good at both (working on bikes and drinking beer).

Turn-around is typically between an hour and a day and service fees start at $80. I accept cash, and checks. You can also offset your payment with gift cards to local Arlington Heights restaurants  and of course, BEER.

I offer a $10 “credit” per 6-pack (but it’s gotta be something nice, so go see our friends over at the Tuscan Market or Beer on the Wall if you need ideas). I’ll call you when I’m done and we’ll set up a time for you to pick it back up.  Oh, and I’m happy to store your bike for one business day. After that, you’ll owe me more beer.

Need Something Other Than a Tuneup Or Repairs?
